In the third quarter of 2003, e-book sales were up 37% over the same quarter in 2002, according to a new sales report from the Open eBook Forum (OeBF), a group advocating open standards for e-books. In that quarter, 2, 159 new titles were published by the 30 largest publishing houses, and sales added up to $2, 591, 465. It was good enough to spur sales of the millionth e-book for the year by September.
"These figures are particularly significant in light of the departure of e-book sales by Gemstar and Barnesandnoble.com, " said Nick Bogaty, executive director of the OeBF. "Double-digit growth shows the strength of this industry and e-books represent one of the fastest growing segments in all of publishing."
